Funded by the National Cancer Institute, NHLIC: En Acción originated as a 5-year research and demonstration project in 1992 and has received a 2-year extension which takes the program through 1999.

Researchers conducted a baseline survey of 8,918 participants at the 6 national sites in 1993-94. Full intervention began in 1992 and continued until 1998. A midpoint panel survey of 1,600 respondents took place in 1995, and a follow-up survey of 8,968 participants was completed in 1998.

In the final 2 years of funding, process evaluation is leading to program training and replication. In addition, the NHLIC: En Acción team is producing scientific publications based on the baseline data, panel and follow-up survey results.
